This story is loosely based upon a fable I came across in the Sunday School manual while teaching the 13-year-old class in 1998. (I wish I could remember the name of the manual and/or the lesson number, if anyone can find it please let me know.) The original story was about the workers in a particular city, and the mayor's dilemma of keeping them motivated. I changed the context somewhat to a Citizen Kane-style corporate machine, and coined the name "Domingo Tool & Die". I also changed the wise old man at the end of the story to a wise old woman, just for fun.

This is one of my favorite stories in the collection, simply because I feel the pictures do such an effective job of pulling the reader into an alternate universe.
